MARDI Hosted Workshop on Genebank Operations & Advanced Learning (GOAL) for Genebank Management 2017

MARDI through the Genebank and Seed Centre (GB) and Corporate Communication and Quality Centre (CC) have successfully organized a workshop on Genebank Operations and Advanced Learning (GOAL) for Genebank Management 2017 from 31st July to 4th August 2017 at Tan Sri Mohamad Jamil Seminar Room, MARDI Serdang. The workshop was funded by the Crawford Fund, Australia to develop and enhance capacity building in genebank management.

The workshop has brought together 28 local and international participants from Asia Pacific region and 8 trainers from MARDI, Crawford Fund, Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT), Bioversity International (Malaysia Office) and Department of Agriculture Malaysia (DOA).

The workshop was officiated by the YBrs. Dr Mohamad Roff bin Mohd Noor (Deputy Director General of MARDI).

The five-day workshop was organized to focus on the main aspects of genebank management operations including:

  1. Genebank Quality Management Systems (QMS) fundamentals
  2. Compliance and adherence to treaties and regulatory policy
  3. Labelling in genebanks
  4. Conservation storage, viability testing and safety duplication, regeneration, characterization and genetic integrity
  5. Biosafety especially on phytosanitary and post entry quarantine
  6. Capacity building, succession planning and proactive management
  7. Database management

Apart from the workshop, the participants were brought to MyGeneBank™ complex to see the facilities and current set up of the National Genebank on the second day. After the visit, the participants and trainers were served with Malaysian tropical fruits (including durians). Some of them has tasted durian for the first time and fell in love with the taste. On the fourth day, they visited the Crop for the Future Research Centre (CFF) in Semenyih to view the facilities and its current operation.

The participants were officially awarded with workshop certificates delivered by YBhg. Datuk Dr. Sharif bin Haron (Director General of MARDI) during the closing dinner at PICC, Putrajaya.

It is an international recognition to MARDI for hosting this workshop. The workshop has successfully met the objectives and the feedbacks from the participants and trainers were compiled by Dr. Nelissa Jamora (GCDT) based on her survey and analysis. #genebank #bettermardi #ourfoodourfuture #Negaraku
